Leeds close to deal for international defender

Leeds United have made a contract offer to defender Marius Zaliukas.

The Lithuanian international defender has been training with Leeds for the past week and Leeds boss Brian McDermott says he is close to landing the former Heart of Midlothian captain, who has been a free agent since leaving Tynecastle in the summer.

“We`ve talked about a contract until the end of the season,” McDermott told the official website .

“We`re pretty close in negotiations and will hopefully get things done.”

Zaliukas made over 200 appearances for Hearts during a seven-year spell north of the border with him being linked with a move to Manchester United during his time there.

The 29-year-old was forced to leave Hearts at the end of last season with the SPL side in dire financial problems and he has also had trials with Glasgow Rangers and Queens Park Rangers.

Despite being without a club so far this season, Zaliukas recently represented Lithuania in their World Cup qualifiers against Latvia and Bosnia.
